Glomus tumor: blue macule in the nail bed.

BLUE MACULE IN NAIL BED (PLATE)

A blue macule (discoloured patch of skin) is a common nail feature in glomus tumor (= a painful lesion in the nail bed, often exacerbated by pressure of cold temperature). It is usually visible through the nail plate as a blue or red stripe. Cause: unknown, but often there is a history of trauma to the affected finger.

Treatment: surgical excision

Synonyms: Blue nail bed, bluish stripe
