  • Digit ratio: Finger length is related to physical aggression

    AUTHOR: [unknown]

SUMMARY: According to a new study by researchers at the University of Alberta the length of a male's index finger relative to his ring finger can predict how physically aggressive a man is. Women do not show a similar effect. "Finger lengths explain about five per cent of the variation in these personality measures, so research like this won't allow you to draw conclusions about specific people. For example, you wouldn't want to screen people for certain jobs based on their finger lengths," Hurd said. "But finger length can you tell you a little bit about where personality comes from, and that's what we are continuing to explore."

    AUGUSTUS 16 - Psychology Today:
  • The Hands of Babies

    AUTHORS: Elise Kramer

SUMMARY: Babies can learn sign language before they learn to talk, and it may improve their overall language skills. Babies have the cognitive capacity to understand language before they can speak, and early on, have better control of their hands than their mouths. In one study, 140 pairs of parents were randomly asked to use hand signals or provide plenty of verbal stimulation.

  • Clever artificial hand developed

    AUTHOR: [unknown]

SUMMARY: Scientists have developed an ultra-light limb that they claim can mimic the movement in a real hand better than any currently available. The University of Southampton team has designed a prototype artificial hand that uses six sets of motors and gears so each of the five fingers can move independently.

    SEPTEMBER 9 - Psychology Today:
  • Sexuality: Your Telltale Fingertips

    AUTHORS: Willow Lawson

SUMMARY: How your hands are a marker for behavior. Relative finger length -- or digit ratio -- is a marker for brain differences molded by hormones. A recent study of digit ratio in Scottish preschool children between the ages of 2 and 4 found strong relationships between digit ratio and gender-normative behavior. Girls with masculine-type finger ratios tend to have higher hyperactivity scores and more problems relating to their peers than do other girls. The same study, published in Early Human Development, found that boys with female-type finger lengths are on average more emotional than other boys.

    RESEARCH published in 2005:

    JANUARI 1 - Schizophrenia Research:
  • Dermatoglyphic anomalies in psychometrically identified schizotypic young adults.

AUTHORS: Chok JT, Kwapil TR, Scheuermann A.

SUMMARY: The present study examined the presence of dermatoglyphic anomalies in psychometrically identified schizotypic young adults (n = 51) and control participants (n = 63), selected based upon their scores on the Perceptual Aberration and Magical Ideation Scales. The Perceptual Aberration-Magical Ideation group exhibited lower total and absolute finger ridge counts and less complex pattern types than control participants--findings consistent with anomalies reported in patients with schizophrenia.

    KEYWORDS: schizophrenia, dermatoglyphic anomalies

    JANUARI - Ginecol Obstet Mex.:
  • Occurrence of preterm and term low birth weight deliveries and presence of the Sydney crease.

AUTHORS: Corona Rivera JR, Esparza Rodríguez M, Jiménez Leal CM, Corona Rivera A, Pérez Molina Jde J.

SUMMARY: OBJECTIVE: To determine whether simian and Sydney creases are associated to preterm delivery or to term low birth weight. Sydney crease presence was associated with near to two-fold frequency to preterm birth (OR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.11-3.23) and more than double with low birth weight (OR: 2.33, 95% Cl: 1.07-5.23). CONCLUSIONS: Sydney crease was associated with occurrence of the preterm and term low birth weight deliveries.

KEYWORDS: low birth weight, Sydney crease

JAN-MARCH - West African journal of medicine:
  • Dermatoglyphics of mothers of Malawian children with spina bifida cystica: a comparative study with female controls.

    AUTHORS: Igbigbi PS, Adeloye A.

SUMMARY: Dermatoglyphic traits are formed under genetic control early in development and do not change thereafter. We determined the dermatoglyphic traits of mothers of children with spina bifida cystica and compared then with controls. Results: Palmar pattern types, showed absence of arches, significantly higher frequency of whorls (P > 0.05), lower total finger ridge count (TFRC) and higher Pattern Intensity Index (PII) in these mothers than in the controls (P > 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate dermatoglyphic differences between both groups that suggest that mothers presenting with these traits are more predisposed to giving birth to children with spina bifida cystica.

KEYWORDS: physical aggression, finger length ratio, 2D:4D ratio

    MARCH - Biological Psychology:
  • Finger length ratio (2D:4D) correlates with physical aggression in men but not in women. (PDF-document)

    AUTHORS: Bailey AA, Hurd PL.

SUMMARY: Finger length ratio (2D:4D) is a sexually dimorphic trait. Men with lower, more masculine, finger length ratios had higher trait physical aggression scores (r(partial) = -0.21, N = 134, P = 0.028). We found no correlation between finger length ratio and any form of aggression in females. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that testosterone has an organizational effect on adult physical aggression in men.

KEYWORDS: physical aggression, finger length ratio, 2D:4D ratio

    JUNI 15 - Schizophrenia Research:
  • Dermatoglyphics and Schizophrenia: a meta-analysis and investigation of the impact of obstetric complications upon a-b ridge count.

AUTHORS: Bramon E, Walshe M, McDonald C, Martín B, Toulopoulou T, Wickham H, van Os J, Fearon P, Sham PC, Fañanás L, Murray RM.

SUMMARY: BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia show deviances in their dermatoglyphics, in particular reductions in palmar a-b ridge counts (ABRCs). CONCLUSIONS: We confirmed the presence of significant yet mild ABRC reductions in schizophrenia.

KEYWORDS: schizophrenia, dermatoglyphics, a-b ridge count

JULI 7 - Journal of Theoretical Biology:
  • Fingerprint formation.

    AUTHORS: Kücken M, Newell AC.

SUMMARY: Fingerprints (epidermal ridges) have been used as a means of identifications for more than 2000 years. However, despite all the empirical and experimental knowledge, no widely accepted explanation for the development of epidermal ridges on fingers, palms and soles has yet emerged. The computer results are consistent with the well-known observation that the pattern type is related to the geometry of the fingertip surface when fingerprint patterns are formed.

    KEYWORDS: epidermal ridges, fingerprints, development

    JULI 15 - Schizophrenia Research:
  • Extralimital triradii as a putative marker of schizotypy.

    AUTHORS: Chok JT, Kwapil TR.

SUMMARY: Dermatoglyphic anomalies are reported to occur at a higher rate in schizophrenic patients and schizotypic individuals than in the general population. As hypothesized, the schizotypic participants (6.6%) exhibited significantly higher rates of extralimital triradii than control participants (1.5%). These findings strongly encourage the future investigation of extralimital triradii in at-risk and psychotic populations.

KEYWORDS: schizophrenic and schizotypic patients, dermatoglyphic anaomalies

JULI 19 - American Journal of Human Biology:
  • The second to fourth digit ratio in elite and non-elite female athletes.

AUTHORS: Leszek Pokrywka, Dominik Racho, Krystyna Suchecka-Racho, Larysa Bitel.

SUMMARY: We measured the 2D:4D ratios in elite and non-elite female athletes and compared them with female individuals not engaged in any sport activities. Our results showed that elite female athletes have significantly lower left hand 2D:4D ratios compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Therefore, we can speculate that low 2D:4D ratio may be a positive correlate of sports potential in females.

KEYWORDS: female athletes, sports potential, 2D:4D ratio

SEPTEMBER - Am J Phys Anthropol.:
  • Grip preference, dermatoglyphics, and hand use in captive chimpanzees.

AUTHORS: Hopkins WD, Russell JL, Hostetter A, Pilcher D, Dahl JF.

SUMMARY: This paper examined the association between grip type, hand use, and fingerprint patterns in a sample of captive chimpanzees. The results indicated that chimpanzees exhibit significantly more thumb-index responses for the right compared to the left hand. In addition, thumb-index responses were more prevalent for subjects that had a whorl compared to a loop or arch on their thumb. The results suggest that fingerprint patterns are associated with individual differences in grasping type in chimpanzees as well as some variation in hand use.

KEYWORDS: hand grip, chimpanzees, fingerprint patterns

OCTOBER 7 - Proc Biol Sci.:
  • Second to fourth digit ratio and face shape.

AUTHORS: Fink B, Grammer K, Mitteroecker P, Gunz P, Schaefer K, Bookstein FL, Manning JT.

SUMMARY: The average human male face differs from the average female face in size and shape of the jaws, cheek-bones, lips, eyes and nose. We found that (i) prenatal sex steroid ratios (in terms of 2D : 4D) and actual chromosomal sex dimorphism operate differently on faces, (ii) 2D : 4D affects male and female face shape by similar patterns, but (iii) is three times more intense in men than in women. There was no evidence that these effects were confounded by allometry or facial asymmetry.

KEYWORDS: facial characteristics, 2D:4D ratio, digit ratio

    NOVEMBER - Cutis:
  • The disappearing nail bed: a possible outcome of onycholysis.

AUTHORS: Daniel CR 3rd, Tosti A, Iorizzo M, Piraccini BM.

SUMMARY: Onycholysis is a separation of the nail plate from the underlying and/or lateral supporting structures (hyponychium, nail bed, lateral nail folds). The best chance of resolving onycholysis is to try to identify the causative agent and institute early therapy.

KEYWORDS: facial characteristics, 2D:4D ratio, digit ratio

    DECEMBER - Collegium Antropologicum:
  • Visualizing facial shape regression upon 2nd to 4th digit ratio and testosterone. (PDF-document)

AUTHORS: Schaefer K, Fink B, Mitteroecker P, Neave N, Bookstein FL.

SUMMARY: Sex steroids are supposed to moderate the differences between male and female facial characteristics. We found some evidence for opposite effects of early androgen action (via 2D:4D ratio) on the upper and the lower face respectively (i.e. low 2D:4D ratio results in a relatively robust and prominent lower face).

KEYWORDS: facial characteristics, 2D:4D ratio, digit ratio

OCT-DEC - J Indian Soc Pedod Prev Dent.:
  • Dermatoglyphic peculiarities in children with oral clefts.

AUTHORS: Mathew L, Hegde AM, Rai K.

SUMMARY: Dermatoglyphic data from 50 oral cleft children and 50 normal children were collected using the ink method and comparison was done between them. In the present study, we found an increase in the ulnar loop patterns on the distal phalanges of the ten fingers, an increase in the atd angle and an increase in the fluctuating asymmetry of the atd angle in the oral cleft children.

KEYWORDS: oral cleft children, distal phalanges, ulnar loops, atd angle

    ? - Developmental Neuropsychology:
  • Gender Differences in Relations of Mental Rotation, Verbal Fluency, and SAT Scores to Finger Length Ratios as Hormonal Indexes.

AUTHORS: Burton LA, Henninger D, Hafetz J.

SUMMARY: The finger-length ratios showed an interesting relation with the cognitive variables for the men and women. For the men, better performance on the measures, including mental rotation, verbal fluency, and verbal Scholastic Achievement Test score was associated with less of a male-typical finger-length ratio pattern, or higher ratios. For the women, better performance for mental rotation and verbal fluency was associated with less of a female-typical finger-length ratio pattern, or lower ratios.

KEYWORDS: gender differences, mental rotation, verbal fluency, SAT scores, finger length ratio
