  • Men's fingers and faces reveal masculinity and attractiveness to women

    AUTHOR: F. Cappelle

SUMMARY: Both our faces and our fingers have a lot to reveal about ourselves. New research suggests that women can spot subtle signs of interest in children in a man's face, and accurately assess his level of the sex hormone testosterone. Research, by Dr. Roney and Dr. Maestripieri, suggests that the ratio of the lengths of the second and fourth fingers (2D:4D ratio) is also associated with men's attractiveness as well as with levels of behavioral displays during social interactions with potential mates.

    KEYWORDS: attractiveness, masculinity, fingers, 2D:4D

  • Finger Length Ratio May Predict Women's Sporting Prowess

    AUTHORS: [unknown]

SUMMARY: The difference between the lengths of a woman's index and ring fingers may indicate her sporting prowess, suggests research published ahead of print in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. The researchers base their findings on x ray pictures of the right and left hands of 607 female twins, whose average age was 53. Most were right handed. Participation levels were highest for swimming, cycling, tennis and running in descending order. The association with finger ratio was highest for running, soccer, and tennis. The highest achievement in any sport was strongly linked to a low second to fourth finger ratio. Running ability was particularly associated with a low (male pattern) ratio.

KEYWORDS: sporting prowess, index finger, ring finger

    AUTHOR: Kenneth Lagerstrom

SUMMARY: On the hands of many people with diabetes there appears a set of small lines on the palms, perpendicular to the heart line. These small lines look almost like little cuts on the hand, as if the tip of a knife was pressed into the skin. The small lines either connect to or cut through the line of heart.

KEYWORDS: diabetes, heart line, small lines

    OCTOBER 17 - washingtonpost.com:
  • Finger Forecasts

    AUTHORS: Jennifer Huget

SUMMARY: Palm Reading? Forget It. But the Length of Your Digits Just Might Hold Hints About Who You Are. A new study in a British medical journal finds a link between the relative length of a woman's index and ring fingers and her athletic prowess. The research takes its place among dozens of other studies tying digit ratio to to all manner of physical and psychological traits, from breast cancer risk to schizophrenia. In any case, as Breedlove observes, digit ratio is not a great tool for making predictions about individuals; it's more useful at assessing probabilities for groups of people.

    KEYWORDS: digits length, digit ratio

    JANUARI - J. Physiol. Anthropol.:
  • The frequency of fingerprint type in parents of children with Trisomy 21 in Japan.

    AUTHORS: Matsuyama N, Ito Y.

SUMMARY: Analysis of the frequency data of each fingerprint type (arch, ulnar loop, radial loop, and whorl) of the parents of children with Trisomy 21 (Fathers: 71; Mothers: 128). Results showed significant differences, more arches (p < 0.0001) and fewer whorls (p < 0.05) in mothers of children with Trisomy 21. Among fathers of Trisomy 21 children, a significant difference was found in there being fewer whorls (p < 0.05) and ulnar loops (p = 0.06). Considering the mothers' fingerprints, we suspected that females with a higher frequency of arches and a lower frequency of whorls had a stronger possibility of bearing Trisomy 21 babies.

KEYWORDS: Down syndrome, trisomy 21, fingerprints

    JANUARI - Psychoneuroendocrinology:
  • 2nd to 4th digit ratio (2D:4D) and number of sex partners in men.

AUTHORS: Hönekopp J, Voracek M, Manning JT.

SUMMARY: The number of sexual partners per individual (NSP) is an important component of sexual behaviour. Accordingly we found: (a) in a sample of 99 German heterosexual male undergraduates right hand 2D:4D (but not left hand 2D:4D) was significantly negatively associated with reported lifetime NSP. The relationship between NSP and 2D:4D appears to be confined to heterosexual men.

KEYWORDS: number of sexual partners, digit ratio, 2D:4D ratio

    FEBRUARI - Am J Med Genet A.:
  • High heritability of fingertip arch patterns in twin-pairs.

AUTHORS: Reed T, Viken RJ, Rinehart SA.

SUMMARY: The presence of an arch pattern on at least one fingertip has previously been suggested as an autosomal dominant trait with reduced penetrance. The frequency of arches in the entire sample was 4.3% (2,175/50,850), 5.5% in females and 3.2% in males. The best fitting model, which allowed for the prevalence of arches to differ between males and females, had a heritability of 91%.

KEYWORDS: twins, twin pairs, fingertip arch patterns

    FEBRUARI - Horm. Behav.:
  • A longitudinal study of digit ratio (2D:4D) in Jamaican children.

    AUTHORS: Trivers R, Manning J, Jacobson A.

SUMMARY: It has been hypothesised that the ratio between the length of the 2nd and 4th digits (2D:4D) is a correlate of prenatal sex steroids, and this relationship is strongest for the right hand. We conclude that 2D:4D increases slightly with age in children with the effect less marked for the right hand (i.e. the hand which is likely to show the strongest association with prenatal steroids), 2D:4D is sexually dimorphic from an early age, and the rank order of 2D:4D is stable in children.

KEYWORDS: children, digit ratio, 2D:4D ratio

FEBRUARI - J. Autism Dev. Disord.:
  • Autistic spectrum disorder: Relationship to motor control and 2:4 digit ratio.

    AUTHORS: Milne E, White S, Campbell R, Swettenham J, Hansen P, Ramus F.

SUMMARY: Children with autistic spectrum disorder and controls performed tasks of coherent motion and form detection, and motor control. Children in the experimental group were impaired at tasks of motor control, and had lower 2D:4D than controls. There were significant relationships between motion coherence detection and motor control in both groups of children, and also between motion detection, fine motor control and 2D:4D in the group of children with autistic spectrum disorder.

KEYWORDS: autism, autistic spectrum disorder, digit ratio, 2D:4D ratio

APRIL - Int. J. Obes. (Lond):
  • The 2nd-4th digit ratio (2D:4D) & neck circumference in coronary heart disease.

AUTHORS: Fink B, Manning JT, Neave N.

SUMMARY: Neck circumference (NC) is a simple and time-saving screening measure to identify obesity. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: 2D:4D ratios, NC, along with measures of waist and hip circumferences, body mass index (BMI), and waist-to-hip ratio was recorded from 127 men and 117 women. A significant positive correlation between 2D:4D and NC and was found for men but not for women after controlling for body mass index (BMI).

KEYWORDS: coronary heart diseases, digit ratio, 2D:4D ratio, neck circumference

    OCTOBER 31 - Dermatol. Online J.:
  • Correlation between IQ and dermatoglyphic indices of Down syndrome patients.

    AUTHORS: Saadat M, Mehdipour P.

SUMMARY: The fingerprint patterns, simian crease, and total ridge count of 41 mild and 61 severe mentally handicapped patients with Down syndrome (DS) were compared with a control group of 200 mentally normal individuals. Patients and controls were unrelated Iranian Muslims. Significant differences were observed within DS patients with different levels of mental retardation.

KEYWORDS: IQ, down syndrome, fingerprint, simian crease

    NOV/DEC - Am. J. Hum. Biol.:
  • Digit ratio and hand-grip strength in men.

AUTHORS: Fink B, Thanzami V, Seydel H, Manning JT.

SUMMARY: The ratio of the length of the second and fourth digits (2D:4D), a putative proxy of prenatal testosterone (PT), is correlated with measures of physical fitness. We found that: 1 - the German men were heavier and stronger, but had higher 2D:4D (lower PT) than the Mizos men; 2 - a median split for grip strength into low (LGS) and high (HGS) groups showed that for right-hand 2D:4D (but not left-hand 2D:4D), the LGS men had higher 2D:4D than the HGS men; 3 - the relationships between right 2D:4D and grip strength were independent of ethnicity, age, height, and weight.

KEYWORDS: hand grip, digit ratio, 2D:4D ratio

DECEMBER - Br. J. Sports Med.:
  • The big finger: the second to fourth digit ratio is a predictor of sporting ability in women.

AUTHORS: Paul SN, Kato BS, Hunkin JL, Vivekanandan S, Spector TD.

SUMMARY: OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between 2d:4d and sports ability in women. RESULTS: The highest achieved level of participation in any sport was significantly negatively associated with 2d:4d (b = -4.93, p = 0.01) as was the relationship between 2d:4d and running level (b = -6.81, p = 0.034). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that a low 2d:4d ratio is related to increased female sports ability.

KEYWORDS: sports ability, digit ratio, 2D:4D ratio

    DECEMBER - Lik. Sprava.:
  • [Article in Ukrainian] [Prognostic and diagnostic criteria in the development of bronchial asthma in children of young school age]

    AUTHOR: Protsiuk TL.

SUMMARY: The analyzes of anthropometric parameters, somatotype and dermatoglyphics of children aged 7-12 years with bronchial asthma have been studied. Obtained results have shown that somatotype and dermatoglyphics are specific genetic and phenotype markers of susceptibility to the development of bronchial asthma.

    KEYWORDS: bronchial asthma, dermatoglyphics

    [date unknown] - Kardiologiia.:
  • [Article in Russian] [Complex analysis of risk factors of hypertension in subjects involved in managerial activity]

    AUTHORS: Beliaev OV, Kuznetsova ZM.

SUMMARY: We performed complex analysis of genetic and nongenetic factors facilitating development of arterial hypertension in subjects involved in managerial activity and revealed peculiarities of dermatoglyphic phenotype of susceptibility to this type of pathology. Basing on results of this study we created system of criteria for formation of a group of elevated risk of hypertension and system of measures aimed at prevention of cardiovascular diseases in subjects involved in neuro-emotional labor.

    KEYWORDS: hypertension, dermatoglyphic phenotypes
