Whitish / white is the normal colour in the fingernail's free edge. The free edge's shape is an indirect result of the shape of the nail moon (= nail matrix). When the distal nail edge is lifted (= usually a painless seperation from the nail bed), the white zone of the free edge becomes larger and the colour turns into yellow.

Causes are: trauma, water, nail bed disease, medical problems (e.g. psoriasis, yellow nail syndrome).
