YELLOW
HYPONYCHIUM


Brown or black PYGMENTATION of the HYPONYCHIUM or the other nail folds is better known as 'Hutchinson's sign'.

A YELLOW HYPONYCHIUM might be an early stage of fungal infection, and can develop as Onychomycosis in the nail plate.

The most common direct cause is fungal infection, and the feature is sometimes a feature of psoriasis.

THE NAIL UNIT

The eight basic components of the nail unit include: 1 - proximal nail fold; 2 - cuticle; 3 - lunula; 4 - nail plate; 5 - lateral nail folds; 6 - nail bed; 7 - hyponychium; 8 - free edge.
